...and we'd be honored to make you one of us
Railroad Training Services was founded by Rick Carter in 1999 out of
the need for quality trained candidates to fulfill the thousands of
vacancies all across North America, in addition to training the
fresh new railroaders already working on the rails.
Rick has enjoyed a lifelong career in railroading spanning over 37
years, starting as a laborer with the Western Pacific Railroad and
prior to opening Railroad Training Services new Stockton Career
center, completed his railroad service as a Passenger Conductor with
Amtrak. During that career, Rick has worked as a Carman with
the Western Pacific/Union Pacific Railroads, Mechanical Shop Craft
Instructor for the Human Resources Department of the UP, as a Motive
Power & Equipment Inspector for the Federal Railroad Administration,
and most recently as a Passenger Conductor with Amtrak.
During his career, Rick found working as a Carman the most rewarding
and has fond memories of many years spent repairing, inspecting,
servicing, and even completely rebuilding freight cars and cabooses.
Rick also spent many years cleaning up train derailments all over
Northern California as a Carman, being one of a select few in his
service unit qualified as a crane operator. It came as no
surprise when Rick announced that the first phase of Railroad
Training Services new Career Center would be classes in, you guessed
it, Freight Car Mechanical Training.
Assisting Rick as an Instructor is son Tom Carter, himself a
Locomotive Engineer, Switchman, Brakeman and Conductor. Tom
has 5 years of experience in Passenger and Freight railroading and
in addition to teaching, he also assembles the curriculum, manages
systems and anything else necessary to assist Rick in managing
Railroad Training Services Career Center and conducting off-site
training.
